When do most parishes hear confessions?

Saturday afternoon, usually in the hour or so before the vigil Mass, is the most common slot in the United States. Many parishes also hear confessions before daily Mass, and nearly all will arrange a time by appointment if none of the posted hours work for you.

What do I say in confession?

Begin with the Sign of the Cross and “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [however long] since my last confession.” Then say your sins plainly. The priest may offer a word of counsel, will give you a penance, and absolves you. If you have forgotten the Act of Contrition, say so — he will help you through it.

What if it has been years?

Tell the priest that at the start. It is one of the most ordinary things he hears, and he will walk you through the whole thing. Nothing you say can leave the confessional: the seal is absolute and binds the priest without exception.

Is confession free?

Always. It is a sacrament. No parish charges for it and none ever will.
